Artist's Statement

I never know what is going to inspire me to paint, but when I see it the magic stirs inside and I run for my camera. Animals, landscapes, and flowers most often become the focus of my camera lens. Then I return to the solitude of my studio to draw and paint.

Transparent watercolors have been my favorite medium for all the years that I have been painting. Digital painting has been a new and wonderful experience for me over the last five years; it has been greatly informed by my experience with watercolor painting. While often considered too challenging for beginners, it is the challenge itself with watercolors that I have always enjoyed. Of course, as I become more acquainted with the technique, it has revealed more of itself to me. The process of mixing colors and applying them to the paper is an exciting one. Using the computer and image editing software has also been very exciting and challenging. I have a lot of inquiries about how I do the digital paintings.

At the age of nine when I first started drawing entertainers from the weekly TV Guide, it was the excitement of making a drawing that everyone could recognize. Later when I started using paint, it was the desire to capture the feel of a beautiful scene or moment. As I became more experienced and formally trained with composition and value, it was the challenge of bringing light and shadow together in an interesting way.

The wonderful part of the process is every part of the process from “seeing” a beautiful scene, making a composition in the studio or on the computer, drawing the images, smelling the paints and paper, feeling the brush in my hand and making the many decisions such as what to leave white and which colors to put here and there. After all of that, if someone likes the finished piece, it’s double the fun.

My artwork has been in juried shows, often capturing ribbons; the positive response to my work has resulted in numerous sales over the years. Making giclée prints of the work available in the last 2 yrs. has given people living on a tighter budget the opportunity to own my images at a more affordable price.

I have earned several educational degrees in different fields....religious education, biology, medical technology, and social work. I have been working as a social worker in the community for the last 20 years. I am a self-taught artist and my art has been a passionate labor filled with enjoyment and personal fulfillment. I hope that you are able to join me in enjoying the fruits of my gift.
